prom
Velvet, emerald and burgundy, sparkle, soft butter yellow, deliberate all-black and the white tux: the prom colors and styles we are watching for 2027, with pieces you can wear now.
Prom 2027 is still months away, but the looks are already taking shape. This is our read on the colors and styles to watch — based on the prom aesthetics we tracked through last season and on what's actually on our racks right now. No crystal ball and no made-up numbers: just the directions we expect to carry forward, and real pieces you can wear to follow them.
Start With a Vibe, Not a Color
The biggest shift we saw last season was how guys shop for prom. Instead of asking "what color is in?", more of them start with an aesthetic — bold and loud, dark and moody, regal and classic, soft and romantic, or sleek and shiny — and pick colors inside it. If you don't know yours yet, take the prom aura quiz. It sorts you into Main Character, Villain Era, Royal, Soft Boy or Drip and points you at matching pieces.
Six Directions to Watch for Prom 2027
Velvet Keeps Its Crown
Texture That Photographs
Velvet has been a prom favorite for several seasons running, and we don't see it slowing down. The reason is simple: the texture shows up in photos in a way flat fabric doesn't, catching light and adding depth under evening lighting. It also fits almost every aesthetic, from moody all-black to regal jewel tones.
The easiest way to wear it is a velvet jacket over black trousers rather than a full velvet suit. Our velvet blazers run from wine and burgundy to purple, royal blue, navy, emerald, hunter green and black. If you want to go all in, our velvet double-breasted tuxedos come in emerald, burgundy, black, royal blue, brown and eggplant.
Jewel Tones: Emerald and Burgundy
Rich, Regal, Reliable
Emerald green has been one of the defining prom colors of recent years, and burgundy is its natural partner — deep, romantic and easy to wear. Both work for the regal, classic crowd and for the darker, moodier looks alike.
Pair either one with a crisp white or black shirt and let gold or black accessories finish it. Browse our prom tuxedos for emerald and burgundy velvet, and a burgundy damask brocade tux with a black satin lapel if you want pattern as well as color.
Sparkle, Glitter and Metallics
Main Character Energy
For the guys who want to be seen from across the room, metallics and shine were on the rise last season — sequin lapels, glitter jackets, silver and gold. Worn right, it looks like confidence, not a costume.
The trick is one shiny piece at a time. Our sparkle and glitter blazers include The Midas (black and gold), The Chrome (black and silver), The Crown (white and gold), The Frost (white and silver), plus emerald, cobalt, purple and bronze glitter jackets. Wear one with black trousers, a white shirt and a simple black bow tie, and let the jacket do the talking.
Soft Colors: Butter Yellow, Champagne, Dusty Rose
The Romantic Side
At the other end of the spectrum, soft and romantic looks kept growing — butter yellow, blush and dusty rose, champagne, sage and powder blue. These colors suit spring proms and photograph beautifully in daylight.
You don't need a pastel suit to join in. Our Gold Coast prom look pairs a navy suit with a butter yellow bow tie — the easiest way to try the color. If you do want the full effect, our stretch two-piece tuxedos come in champagne, light gold, dusty rose and sage.
All-Black, Done Deliberately
Villain Era
Black never leaves prom, but the way it's worn has changed. Instead of the standard black tux with a white shirt and colored vest, the look is darker and sharper: black on black, satin lapels, a black tie, maybe a black velvet jacket for texture.
Our Shadow look — a black tuxedo with a black necktie — is the clean version of this. It's also the most re-wearable prom outfit you can buy, since it looks right at every formal event afterward. Browse the full range of classic tuxedos if you'd rather build your own.
The Statement Jacket and the White Tux
Two Ways to Stand Apart
Not every guy wants a full suit. A statement jacket over black trousers has become one of the sharpest prom options going, and it's easier to coordinate than a head-to-toe color. Our prom blazers cover floral, paisley, velvet and sequin styles.
For the quiet-luxury crowd, the white or ivory dinner jacket is having a moment — clean, classic and old-Hollywood. Our Prom King look pairs a white tuxedo with a black bow tie. It's a bold choice that still reads as timeless.
What About Fit?
The ultra-skinny suit is on its way out. The direction we saw last season was toward a more relaxed, modern fit: a jacket that skims the body rather than clinging to it, and trousers with a little more room through the thigh and a clean hem that sits on the shoe.
Many prom styles are still cut slim, so the fix is in the size you choose and the tailoring after. Pick the size that closes cleanly across the chest and lets you lift your arms, then hem the trousers so they don't bunch. Order early so there's time for alterations — we recommend at least 4–6 weeks before prom.
Chase Every Trend
Sequins, a pastel shirt and a patterned bow tie at once cancel each other out.
One Trend, Worn Well
Pick the direction that matches your vibe and build a calm outfit around it.
Ignore Your Date
Coordinating on aesthetic — soft with soft, bold with bold — matters more than matching exact colors.
The KCT Standard
We've been dressing students for prom since 1983, and every trend on this list is something you can actually buy and wear today — not a runway idea you'll never find in your size. Follow one direction, get the fit right, and you'll look like you in your prom photos, not like a trend report.
