Style Guide
Should you buy or rent your prom tux for 2027? An honest comparison of cost, fit, re-wear and timing, plus when renting still makes sense.
For years, renting was the default for prom. You picked a tux from a catalog, got measured, wore it for one night and dropped it off the next morning. But it's worth running the numbers and asking a different question: what if you owned it instead? Here's an honest look at buying versus renting a prom tuxedo for 2027 — including the cases where renting still makes sense.
The Case for Buying
Compare the Real Price
Own It, Don't Return It
Start with what owning costs: see current prices for every style on our prom tuxedos page. High-school students can ask about complete Prom bundles from $199.99–$229.99 by providing their school name. When you buy, that's the price of something you keep.
We're not going to quote you what a rental costs — it varies by shop, by style and by what's included. What we'd suggest: get the rental quote you're given in writing, and ask exactly what it covers. Is the shirt included? Shoes? Is there a damage waiver or a late-return fee? Then put that total next to the price of owning.
A Fit That's Actually Yours
Alter It Once
A rental tux has to be ready for the next customer the following weekend, so there's only so much it can be changed to fit you. When you own the tuxedo, a tailor can hem the trousers to your shoes and adjust the sleeves to your arms — permanently.
That matters more than it sounds. Prom photos last forever, and the difference between "close enough" and "fits" shows up in every one of them. Start with our size guide to find your jacket and trouser sizes before you order.
The Second, Third and Fourth Wear
Where Buying Wins
A rental is worth exactly one night. A tuxedo or suit you own shows up again at the next dance, graduation, a family wedding, a holiday party or a college formal. Every time you wear it, the cost per wear goes down — and you skip the rental counter every time.
If re-wearing is the goal, lean classic. A black tux from our tuxedo collection works at almost any formal event for years. You can still make it feel like prom with a bold bow tie, a colored vest or a statement pocket square.
More Choice, Less Stress
Your Look, Not the Catalog's
A rental shop can only offer what it keeps in its rental stock. Buying opens up the pieces that make prom photos memorable: velvet dinner jackets, sparkle blazers, jewel-tone tuxedos and white tuxedos.
It also takes the pressure off the calendar. There's no pickup window the day before prom and no rush to return everything the morning after. Order online with free shipping anywhere in the U.S., try everything on at home, and check our returns and exchanges policy before you buy — it includes 10-day refund returns and 30-day exchanges.
Five Questions to Ask About Any Rental Quote
- Which pieces are included — jacket, trousers, shirt, vest, tie, shoes?
- Is there a separate damage waiver, deposit or cleaning charge?
- When is it ready for pickup, and when is it due back?
- What happens if it's returned late, or if something doesn't fit on pickup day?
- How much can the jacket and trousers actually be adjusted?
Once you have those answers, the comparison with buying becomes much easier to make.
When Renting Can Still Make Sense
We sell tuxedos, so take this with that in mind — but there are honest reasons to rent. If you want a one-off look you know you'll never wear again, like a very specific color to match a theme, renting can be the simpler choice. The same goes if you're still growing quickly and don't expect the tux to fit next year.
Even then, it's worth pricing out both. A classic suit or tux that you'll wear to graduation a few weeks later often tips the math the other way.
Want Everything in One Look?
Our prom suit packages pair a suit, dress shirt and coordinating neckwear so the whole outfit is decided in one step. High-school students can ask about complete Prom bundles from $199.99–$229.99 by providing their school name.
Timing Tip
Whether you buy or rent, don't leave it to the last week. We recommend ordering at least 4–6 weeks before prom so there's time for shipping, a try-on and any alterations. Popular colors and sizes go first as prom season heats up.
Quick Decision Guide
Rent Without Asking
Signing up before you know what's included, what the fees are and when it's due back.
Compare, Then Own
Put the full rental quote next to the price of owning, then pick a look you'll wear again.
Wait Until April
Leaves no room for alterations, exchanges or your first-choice color.
