Wedding Guides
Cocktail, black tie optional, garden semi-formal — what every summer wedding dress code actually requires of a male guest, which colors are off-limits, and how to stay sharp in the heat.
The invitation says "cocktail attire" and the venue is a vineyard in July. Here's exactly what that means for you — and how to look sharp in every dress code without upstaging the groom or melting before the toasts.
Decode the Dress Code
Black Tie Optional
The Safest Read: Dark Suit
You are not required to rent a tuxedo — a dark, well-fitted suit is completely correct. In summer, reach for midnight navy or deep charcoal in tropical-weight wool, a crisp white dress shirt, and a dark silk tie. Black dress shoes, always.
Pro tip: if you own a tuxedo and love wearing it, wear it. "Optional" means both answers are right — it never means jacket optional.
Cocktail Attire
Suit Required, Color Welcome
This is the summer sweet spot: a full suit, but you have room to enjoy color. Medium blue, sage, light grey, or even a muted burgundy all work beautifully at a July or August wedding. Skip the black suit — it reads evening-formal and absorbs heat.
A patterned tie or a linen-blend pocket square is where personality lives. Keep the shirt simple: white or the palest blue.
Semi-Formal & Garden
Lighter Fabric, Lighter Color
Outdoor afternoon ceremony? This is where light tan, stone, and soft blue suits shine — ideally in linen blends or tropical wool that breathes. A two-piece is plenty; save the vest for air-conditioned ballrooms.
You can drop the tie at a true garden-casual wedding, but keep the collar crisp. An open collar with a well-pressed suit still looks intentional; a wrinkled shirt does not.
The Guest Color Rules
White or Ivory Suits
Those belong to the couple. Cream trousers with a navy jacket are fine — a full white suit is not.
Mid Blues, Sage, Tan, Grey
Summer-right, photo-friendly, and zero risk of clashing with the wedding party.
The Groomsmen Color
If the invitation or website shows the party in burgundy, pick something else. When in doubt, ask.
The Heat Strategy
Tropical-weight wool beats cheap "summer" polyester every time — it breathes, drapes, and doesn't shine in photos. Half-lined jackets, moisture-wicking undershirts, and a second collar-saving shirt in the car for the reception are the moves seasoned guests swear by.
