Velvet's depth of color comes from millions of upright fibers — and everything that can go wrong with velvet is really just those fibers getting crushed, flattened, or matted. Protect the pile and the jacket stays showroom-rich for a decade. Here's the complete routine.
The Four Rules of Velvet Care
Brush, Don't Press
After each wear, go over the jacket with a soft garment brush, sweeping in the direction of the nap. This lifts dust before it settles into the pile and revives areas that flattened during the evening — elbow creases, the seat-belt line, under the lapels.
Never iron velvet face-down. A regular iron crushes the pile permanently and leaves a shine mark no cleaner can reverse.
Steam for Wrinkles
Wrinkles come out with steam only — a handheld steamer held a few inches off the fabric, moving constantly, then a light brush while the fibers are still warm. In a hotel room, hanging the jacket in a steamy bathroom for ten minutes does 80% of the job.
For stubborn creases, steam from the reverse side of the fabric so the pile is never under direct heat.
Storage
Wide-shouldered hanger, breathable cotton garment bag, and room to breathe — velvet stored compressed against other garments comes out with pressure marks that take days to relax. Skip plastic bags entirely; trapped moisture dulls the pile.
Off-season, add a cedar block nearby. Moths love natural-fiber pile as much as you do.
Spills & Cleaning
Blot liquids immediately with a dry cloth — dab straight down, never rub sideways, because rubbing grinds the stain into the pile. Once the area dries, brush the nap back up. Anything oily or set-in goes to a professional dry cleaner; tell them it's velvet so it's finished by hand rather than pressed.
Limit dry cleaning to once or twice a season. Each cycle is a little stress on the pile, and a brushed, steamed jacket rarely needs more.
The 60-Second Post-Wear Routine
Empty the pockets, brush with the nap, hang on a wide hanger, leave it outside the closet overnight to air, then put it away. That's it — that one habit is most of velvet ownership.
