A suit size like 42R is two facts: the number tracks your chest (in inches), the letter tracks your height — Short (under ~5'8"), Regular (5'8"-6'1"), Long (over 6'1"). Trousers ship attached to the jacket size with a standard "drop" (a 42 jacket typically pairs a 36 waist), then get hemmed to your length.
Here's what the charts don't tell you: two men with the same chest measurement often wear different sizes, because build — broad shoulders, athletic taper, fuller middle — changes how a jacket has to hang.
