The Unfixable Measurement
The jacket's shoulder seam ends exactly where your shoulder does — no divot, no overhang. Tailors can take in a waist and shorten a sleeve; nobody can rebuild shoulders economically. If the shoulders are wrong, it's the wrong size, full stop.

The Half-Inch Rules
Cuff & Collar
About a half inch of shirt cuff shows past the jacket sleeve; about a half inch of shirt collar shows above the jacket collar. Those two slivers of white are what make a suit look "expensive" in photos — they signal everything was fitted together, not assembled at random.
The Break
Where Trousers Meet Shoes
2026 sits at a slight single break — trousers kiss the shoe once, no pooling fabric. No break (a sliver of sock) still reads modern with slimmer trousers; full break reads dated on everyone. A trouser hem is a $15 alteration — never live with the wrong one.

Colors, In the Order You Should Own Them
1. Navy

Black: Situational

Summer
Breathe or Suffer
Tropical-weight wool is the workhorse: breathable, wrinkle-resistant, photo-safe. Linen blends bring the texture with less of the crumple. And seersucker is legitimately back. Weight Becomes Luxury
Mid-weight wool carries three seasons. Flannel and heavier weaves drape beautifully when it's cold; velvet owns holiday parties and winter formal events. Texture is the cold-weather cheat code — the same navy reads richer in flannel than in a flat weave.
The Occasion Decoder
Job interview: navy or charcoal, white shirt, quiet tie, black shoes. You want them remembering your answers, not your outfit.

Business daily: rotate two or three anchors (navy/charcoal/grey) and vary shirts and ties — nobody notices suit repetition, everyone notices tie repetition.
Date night / dinner: lose the tie, keep the fit. A well-fitted suit with an open collar is the most underrated evening look a man owns.
Black tie invitation: that means a tuxedo, not a black suit — satin lapel, proper studs. "Black tie optional" allows your darkest suit.
Make Them Last
- Rest days: never wear the same suit two days running — wool needs 24 hours to recover its shape.
- Real hangers: wide, shaped shoulders. Wire hangers are how good jackets die.
- Steam, don't iron: a hand steamer removes 95% of wrinkles without ever crushing the fabric. Dry clean only 2-3 times a year — it's harder on wool than wearing it.
- Brush after wear: thirty seconds with a garment brush extends every cleaning interval.
- Re-fit after body changes: suits are built to be adjusted — waists move 2 inches either way. Alterations are maintenance, not failure.

How many suits does a man actually need?
