Fit, color, jacket or full suit, shirt and tie, and when to order so there is time for a hem: the five decisions behind a sharp homecoming look for 2026.

Homecoming is the first formal night of the school year, and it rarely comes with a strict dress code. That freedom is exactly why so many guys overthink it. The good news: a sharp homecoming look comes down to five decisions — fit, color, jacket or full suit, shirt and tie, and giving yourself enough time for a hem. Get those right and the rest takes care of itself.

Five Decisions That Make a Homecoming Look

01

Fit Comes First

Shoulders • Sleeves • Hem

A modest suit that fits will always beat an expensive one that doesn't. Start at the shoulders: the seam should sit where your shoulder ends, with no divot or overhang. The jacket should button without the fabric pulling into an X, and it should be long enough to cover your seat. Sleeves should stop so a little shirt cuff shows.

The ultra-skinny, spray-on look has had its moment. Today's cleanest silhouette is a modern fit — close enough to look tailored, with enough room to actually dance. Trousers should sit on your shoes with a slight break or none at all, never bunched up at the ankle. Not sure of your size before ordering online? Our size guide walks you through jacket, trouser and shirt measurements.

02

Choose a Color You'll Wear Again

Navy • Charcoal • Black • Fall Jewel Tones

If you want one suit that works for homecoming and everything after it, start with navy, charcoal or black. All three flatter almost everyone, photograph well under gym lights and flash, and pair with any date's dress. Navy is the most versatile of the three; black reads the most formal.

Homecoming lands in the fall, so richer colors fit the season too. Burgundy, emerald and teal feel right for an October dance and still look sharp later in the year. If you want to stand out without going loud, let the suit stay classic and bring the color in through the tie or pocket square. Browse the full range on our homecoming suits page — from charcoal and check patterns to teal, pink, sage and silver, plus sparkle and velvet jackets.

Jacket or Full Suit?

Know Your Dance

Homecoming is usually a step less formal than prom, so you have options. A full matching suit is the safe, polished choice and it's the one you'll get the most use out of. A statement jacket — velvet, sparkle or a bold color — over solid black trousers is the fun choice, and it reads as intentional rather than underdressed.

A simple rule: if your school's dance is in a banquet hall or has a "semi-formal" note on the ticket, go full suit. If it's a gym dance and your friends are dressing up for photos, a statement jacket over dark trousers is completely at home. Either way, skip the tuxedo unless you really want one — homecoming doesn't require it.

04

Pair the Shirt and Tie

Keep One Thing Loud

A crisp white shirt works with every suit color and every tie. Light blue is a good second choice under navy or charcoal. Black shirts can look great under a black or jewel-tone suit, but pair them with a tie that has real contrast. Find the collar and sleeve that fit in our dress shirts collection — a shirt that's too loose at the neck will make even a great suit look borrowed.

For the tie, pick one "loud" element and keep everything else quiet. If the suit is bold, go with a solid tie in a darker or neutral shade. If the suit is classic, this is where your color lives — and matching your tie to your date's dress is the easiest way to coordinate. Our ties and bow ties come in enough shades to get close to most dress colors. Finish with dress shoes and a belt in the same leather color; black goes with everything on this list.

05

Build In Time for a Hem

Order Early, Alter Once

Most suit trousers need hemming, and plenty of jackets benefit from a sleeve adjustment. Work backward from the dance. Online orders ship free anywhere in the U.S., with 1–2 days of processing and 5–7 days for standard delivery, so ordering about three weeks out leaves time for a try-on, a hem and any exchange.

Once it arrives, try everything on with the shoes you plan to wear — hems are measured to the shoe. Take it to a tailor you trust near you, or to one of our stores if you're local. Cutting it close? Our rush alterations page covers the faster options at our shops. Alterations are charged separately from the suit.

The Three-Week Rule

Three weeks before the dance: order. Two weeks before: try it on with your shoes and get it pinned. One week before: pick up the alterations and do a full dress rehearsal, tie and all. It sounds like a lot, but it's the difference between walking in confident and fixing a hem with tape the night of.
