The suit-every-day office is mostly gone; the sweatpants-on-video-calls era mercifully ended. What's left is smart casual — the most useful and most misunderstood dress code in the modern workplace. Here's the framework that makes it easy: dress in layers of intent, and always be one adjustment away from more formal.
The Framework
The Anchor Pieces
Smart casual is built on separates: an unstructured blazer, dark tailored trousers or clean chinos, and a shirt that can survive without a tie — oxford, fine knit, or a dress shirt with the top button open. The blazer collection is the load-bearing wall here; one navy and one textured neutral cover 90% of weeks.
Denim can enter the rotation only if it's dark, uniform, and fits like trousers. If it would look wrong with a blazer, it's not smart casual denim.
Read the Industry
Finance and law smart casual means a blazer is still on the chair, a collared shirt is non-negotiable, and shoes are leather. Tech and creative smart casual tolerates knits, clean sneakers, and no jacket — but the man in the soft blazer still reads senior in every meeting. Client-facing days trump office culture: dress for the most formal person in the room.
The reliable tiebreaker: overdress by exactly one notch. Nobody's career ever suffered from a blazer they could take off.
The Capsule
A two-week smart casual wardrobe: two blazers (navy, textured grey or tan), five shirts (two white, one blue, two with quiet pattern or knit), three trousers (charcoal, mid-grey, khaki), brown leather shoes, one belt to match. Every piece works with every other piece — that's the test before anything earns a hanger.
A navy suit doubles the capsule instantly: worn whole for formal days, split into separates the rest of the week. Our navy suits are cut to work both ways.
The One-Adjustment Rule
Every smart casual outfit should convert with a single move: add a tie, swap sneakers for leather, close the top button. If your outfit needs three changes to survive a surprise client meeting, it started too casual.
The KCT Standard
Smart casual lives and dies on fit — without a tie and structure doing the talking, the cut is the message. Since 1983 our in-house tailors have adjusted blazers and trousers to sit right on real bodies, because "casual" was never supposed to mean "shapeless."
Not sure which cuts suit your build? The Find Your Look tool narrows it down in about a minute, and dress shirts in slim and classic cuts cover the shirt half of the equation.
